'Sometime by Asian Designers' collaborates with seasoned Malaysian designer, Alia Bastamam in realising the latest iconic bag - the Basta.

While some women prioritise a bag’s function and price over the latest trend, some don’t mind splurging their hard-earned cash on a designer label. "It" bags are fun, but they often don't have a long lifespan in your wardrobe, they rarely transcend seasons or trends and most designer bags come with a hefty price tag. Nicole Wong and her business partner, Stan Chooi, did something about it. Sometime by Asian Designers is a bag specialist company that offers quality designer bags without the conventional markup.

30-year-old Nicole Wong, Managing Director and Product Specialist at Sometime by Asian Designers, has an eye for fine details right from the creative process of designing the bag to customizing tiny little studs. With her passion in exquisite handbags, she started Sometime by Asian Designers with Stan Chooi, collaborating with home-grown and Asian-based designers.

Sometime by Asian Designers increases accessibility of designer bags to the masses. “Actual cost for making designer bags is far less than what’s shown on the price tag. What people are actually paying for is the appeal added to their social lifestyle. Let’s face it — that one unique bag on your shoulder, in your hand or across your body can boost your ensemble from zero to numero uno. The conventional designer bags are sold for 10-20 times of its actual cost of production. We co-design with selected established Asian designers and then produce the bags in our own factory, the very same factory that produces luxury designer bags for some of the world-renowned brands. We focus on selling the bags online-only at www.sometime.asia. That further cut cost in retail rental and the saving on the cost goes back to our customers”, said Nicole.

Sometime by Asian Designers aims to deliver optimal quality designer bags without the traditional markup. Sometime often works with fashion icons or designers to come up with signature bag designs. “Our team sits and goes through every part of the handbag design with the talents in order to ensure the handbags are functional and practical while maintaining the creative works of the designers. We discuss the materials that are appropriate such as the structure of the handbag and other details. We then manufacture the handbags, all semi-handmade and have it available to the public at prices without the hefty markup. The numbers of handbags produced are limited hence they are exclusive.”

Celebrities and royalties have been donning the creations by luxury fashion designer, Alia Bastamam. This season, Sometime by Asian Designers collaborates and creates the iconic collection of bags designed by Alia Bastamam. Her inspiration for the bag began by picturing the Alia B girl who will be carrying the bag, whereby there are times when she wants to dress down and there are times when she wants to dress to impress. The bag must be perfect for all of her looks. The design of the bag has a simple architecture and incorporates a masculine and sensual vibe at the same time. This is the first bag Alia Bastamam has ever designed and she named it The Basta. Nicole said the design and prototype development process took more than six months because Alia Bastamam wants nothing but perfection for this collaboration.

As a luxury fashion designer, Alia Bastamam is very meticulous and detail in her design requirements. We need to make sure that the product of our collaboration meets the standard that Alia Bastamam has set for her reputable brand. She is also probably one of the most humble designers that I have ever met

added Nicole.

Sometime introduces a new design, once in every four to six weeks. The bags from Sometime are priced between RM169 to RM229 and are available on their website. Most bags at Sometime are produced using microfiber and high-quality synthetic leather. “We love pets and animals. Hence, we try to avoid using animal's skin in the production of our bags as much as possible. These are the material used by many renowned-designer brands in the world nowadays. It is easy to clean and lasts longer than top grain leather that are typically used to produce bags,” she adds.

“We sometimes open for purchase at our showroom by appointment, but we still encourage online-purchases nonetheless.”
