We at Sisters in Vintage HK love to find fellow vintage lovers in HK when we can. So we are so delighted to have newly wed Trulie Lam answer some questions for us. Trulie and her husband are true vintage lovers (she even wears her hair in vintage curls on normal work days!). Their love for vintage inspired their wedding which was a vintage lover's dream.  The attention to detail was amazing and Trulie even made the amazing bridesmaids' head pieces (the bridesmaids looked amazing - no ugly dresses there!)Interview with Trulie (our first Sisters in Vintage HK Vintage Bride): 1)     Hi Trulie, could you first introduce yourself to our readers...

I'm a sucker for these 'style through the years' videos that are making the rounds on the internet. Next to this one which shows the evolution of wedding dress style over 100 years, I'm a big fan of the dance through the ages video, too. I think if I had to do it all over again, I would definitely wear a vintage wedding gown.  I nearly did, actually.  I went to an antique mall and found one there, but it was too small.  I didn't really appreciate vintage the way I do now, so I let that one go...

Starting on the first of September, Liang Yi Museum opened their exhibit "Scholars and Debutantes." This exhibit is a combination of two well curated stories, both linked by the fact that the objects were considered part of the finer luxuries of their time. On the lower level, the public can view artifacts created and used by imperial scholars from the Ming Dynasty. I love the Ming Dynasty's more classic (almost modern) design. There were definitely fewer flourishes and cleaner lines in this time period...

I'm not usually a shorts girl, but something about a summer away from Hong Kong makes me want to embrace a different vintage look.  For one, when we visit NYC, almost all the girls there are scantily clad in sexy denim cut offs, silky tanks with no bras, strappy sandals, etc.  The city's pavements are scorching, much like they are in Hong Kong where my dear sister in vintage is hanging this summer.  But also, unlike in Hong Kong where you can duck into any building or store pumping its air con to cool off, NYC doesn't pump it's air con into the streets...

Summer in HK can be unbearably hot...not just the sunshine but the humidity which makes attempting looking stylish pretty difficult in my books. So how do I do this? The simple thing is I look through my wardrobe and find my crispest, coolest and easiest to wear DRESSES. Generally, my vintage wardrobe consists of nylon and a lot of synthetic materials. Luckily enough I found this 1990s white polka dot dress in cotton. Belted at the waist with a simple belt and add some simple accessories to keep it simple and clean...

What is the difference between these words?  They're used interchangeably, admittedly by me, too.  There is a subtle difference, but at the core they get at the same thing.  Reducing textile waste.  If you click over to Redress HK's website, you can find a comprehensive glossary of terms that will help you understand the important techniques and terms related to sustainability in fashion.  Here's the link. For me, these terms and this concept are certainly applicable in my wearing of vintage...

Vintage inspiration doesn't always have to come from past decades.  While I'm always inspired by actual photos of men and women dressed fabulously in the clothes of that time period, I am equally inspired by people who blend vintage with their modern clothes and in modern contexts as well.   We often look to celebrities for style inspiration, but that can be dangerous.  I don't necessarily think that fame and money automatically equals style.  I like when celebrities seem to have a true sense of personal style; not just wear what some big fancy designer gifted them or what's the latest trend...

Coming back to America in the summer time is fun for many reasons, but one of the things I look forward to most is the vintage shopping, especially at estate sales.  It's a well known fact that the vintage scene is really just emerging in Hong Kong, and I'm encouraged by the number of vintage shopping opportunities that are popping up.  What is still missing from this developing scene is the estate sale experience.  And I have a feeling that we're unlikely to see these become a trend any time soon; not with lack of space, high rents and superstition being so prevalent with the local community...

One of the main reasons I love vintage is knowing that the garment I wear is likely one of a kind.  I never have to worry about running into someone on the street and having that awkward moment when we realize we're wearing the exact same blouse (or something like that).  Vintage garments are unique so when shopping for vintage, you know that if you find something you love and it's your size exactly, it's a match made in heaven...
