Have you heard of the kiwi based arts-crowdfunding platform ‘Boosted’? Well maybe it is time you check it out!
This awesome organisation, set up as a Charitable Trust, has recently reached a significant milestone, namely raising over NZ$3 million dollars for arts and creative projects! How awesome is this?!!
And this in a sector typically dominated by competitive funding bodies.
The NZ$3 million contribution equates to over 22,857 donations across 568 projects in fine-arts, film, theatre, music, dance, writing, fashion, gaming and photography. With some really great projects being realised and changing the lives of the artists.
The platform had a $2 Million goal, which it reached already eight months ago or so, and it shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. In fact it has experienced a 40% year-on-year growth since its inception in 2013!
Boosted caters to everyone and doesn’t judge the content of artistic content.
The real secret to success is support and specialisation
General Manager Simone Hunter says. She continues: ‘At Boosted we specialize in one thing and we do it well. We do this with a very small but incredibly passionate team and this hands-on approach helps gives us a competitive edge over other crowdfunding organizations.”
This niche approach is clearly working, as Boosted is maintaining an 84% success rate, which is one of the highest of its kind in the world. As a reference, the global mammoth Kickstarter sits at around 35.81% while New Zealand’s own Pledge Me has a 50.9% success rate. That is nothing short of impressive.
As well as it’s highly successful ambassador program (a team of practicing artists who help guide and mentor project owners through their crowdfunding campaigns), Boosted also runs an education initiative through the ‘Boosted School of Crowdfunding’, a sponsorship and events off-shot ‘In Good Company’ and patron-lead sponsorship platform ‘Boosted 365’.
This is all part of the organizations strategic approach to remain at the forefront of arts crowdfunding globally by leveraging their knowledge and building upon the platforms popularity.

Boosted is a Charitable Trust that launched in March 2013 with the support of the Arts Foundation in New Zealand.
Unlike other websites which are rewards based, Boosted is a donor based crowd sourcing platform where donors are eligible for a 33% tax credit on their donations.
Artists list their projects on Boosted with a clear financial target. When the project reaches its target the artist receives the funded amount, and donors can claim their 33% tax credit for their donation. If it doesn’t reach the financial target, the project doesn’t go ahead and money is refunded to the donor.
Boosted supports artists across fine-arts, film, theatre, music, dance, writing, fashion, gaming, photography and anything in-between to succeed on its platform. The team support artists through their ’Boosted School of Crowdfunding’, supplying resources and tools to educate artists on crowdfunding best practice, helping project owners learn how to identify and leverage commercial opportunities. Artists learn how to operate commercially and how to raise money privately - while also maintaining the necessary time and energy to focus on the creative process.
The largest project funded was for Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal with the funding matched by the Prime Ministers Canterbury Earthquake Fund. It reached an astonishing NZ$370,000 in donor funding (roughly US$ 265,000).
