Dubai has a vision... to be the hub of art and design not only in the GCC region but to the world.
Under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Design Week was born in 2015. It is one of the world's newest international events and is supported by Dubai Design & Fashion Council and Dubai Culture & Arts Authority.
A 6-day program filled with keynote speeches, panel discussions, public performances and workshops all open to public that means everyone from kids to design professionals have the opportunity to discover, experience and engage with design. I, of course, grabbed the opportunity to attend ISLAMIC GEOMETRIC DESIGN MASTERCLASS WITH ERIC BROUG (it was so popular that they had to organise a second workshop!). Eric is the author of Islamic Geometric Patterns (Thames & Hudson, 2008). This book dissects traditional Islamic arabesque pattern and present it in a easy-to-understand manner. A must-have to all designers who are obsessed with geometric patterns.
I enjoyed his workshop very much and especially the part where he explained what is a good pattern (ones that take the time to calculate and customise the pattern to the space) and what is not and unfinished pattern (slapping patterns on the space without much thought process). We also tried out making simple pattern on templates and tessellates them!
Below some images from the masterclass and the design week itself - enjoy!
