HKwalls 2017 kicked off on Sat 18th March this year with various events, workshops, film screenings happening throughout a 9-days of murals and street art celebration (check out our HK Arts Month article here for other events this month).
The closing party was last night, and all the murals have now been completed. So although you will not be able to see the artists in action, you will instead be able to see the finished murals! Our best tip is to go either early in the morning, late at night, or on a Sunday, as a lot of the murals are painted on shutters which will be open during business hours.
When commissioning the walls, the business owner did have a say in what would be painted on his or her wall, and so often they will have a theme that corresponds to what hides the business inside. This is especially true for the walls done by ANYWAY (a car mechanic shop) and Rodney Stratton's works (the local HK chestnut roasting man at the entrance of the Ovolo Southside Hotel).
We took a walk around the block from the MTR to Ovolo Southside and saw all of these beauties. Image Courtesy Style by Asia. Do not use without permission. Download the map here and go explore!
Love this piece by Rodney Stratton at the very entrance to Ovolo Southside! Very HK indeed. And on the other side, a piece by Kris Abrigo. Loving the people in front of the piece striking their poses just as much as the piece itself!
