Leonardo da Vinci once said 'Leaning never exhausts the mind.' Apparently Karen Mead, one of the creative minds behind Louella Odié, is taking the 'mark making'* knowledge she gained since primary school onto an advance level. While Karen holds a Master of Arts in Print Making, her daughter Lauren is a professional in fashion and lifestyle marketing, the 'dream team' to go for when starting a individual fashion label I'd say (think Prada). So it is never surprising to hear that the mother and daughter join hands together in developing their own print-focused accessories label, that expresses both their passion for oriental culture and also the connection they had with Hong Kong.
*scratching paper over rough surfaces, carving on wood, potato, and rubber board, etc... My teacher in school never uses the word 'print making', recalled from him, "it's the techniques that you played with a 'mark' you made in creating a 'print'".
Hong Kong skyline, sailing boat, fish, and many more. The Louella Odié prints are a merge of traditional and technology-driven printing methods. All linocut by Karen, working from sketches and gradually build into sophisticated prints, not to mention the countless efforts and time she has spent, in carving out every detail that brings character to the print. As if the print themselves are an abstract reflection of the labour work people have input in building Hong Kong from a fishing village into an international financial center.
"We share a love for oceans and islands and every shade of blue."
Together with Karen and Lauren's interest on traveling (they even have a 'Travel Tribe' feature on their website), the concept has given me an inspiration of settling the backdrop of my third feature in Style by Asia at Hong Kong Railway Museum. A transition, a journey that walks us from past to present. There's no intention of re-doing the historic travel scene, but rather on how well the print has interpreted a story that speaks history in its contemporary point of view -- and how badly I'd like to go on for a holiday.
